Why is Buffalo Sewer doing this project?

Buffalo Sewer is working diligently to improve the City’s existing sewer infrastructure in a cost-effective manner that will reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) impacting surface waters. Currently, there is nothing at CSO 055 to prevent water from the Niagara River from flowing back into the sewer collection system when lake levels are high or other storm surges occur. This project will prevent excess flows from entering the system, which will aid in Buffalo Sewer’s goal of reducing the frequency of CSOs, as well as address overloading of the City’s wastewater treatment plant. Basement backups and localized flood events should also be reduced.

What is included in this project?
  • Install two new motorized backwater gate valves to the exterior of the existing structure at CSO 055 that are designed to last for 50+ years
  • Concrete repairs and reinforcement
  • Telecommunication equipment to allow plant operators to control the gates
When will construction begin?
  • Construction will occur in 2025, and is expected to start in May and finish by the end of October
Project Work Area and Shoreline Trail Closure/Detour

What can I expect during construction?

Disturbances such as noise and dust are possible while heavy machinery is in operation. Sewage odors will NOT be present in homes, but may be present outside. These temporary disturbances will be minimized as much as possible.

The project will require a temporary closure (up to 5 months) of a portion of the Shoreline Trail. A plan has been developed to direct pedestrians and cyclists around the work area. See the attached map for more details about the project work location and trail detour.

 Will my service be affected?

Residents should not experience any sewer service interruptions or use limitations.

How is this project being funded?

This project is federally funded by the Department of Homeland Security–Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program
